Silver City Museum

If you were to look for the Silver City Museum expecting to find a square institutional building with a blank facade, you would be disappointed. If, however, you find yourself at a picket fence staring up at a charming red brick Victorian house with a three-story cupola, then you will have discovered the Silver City Museum. Comments from the museum Visitor Log range from "Fantastic!!", "Excellent!", and "Very Interesting!", to "This is among the finest house museums I have visited. All is so well preserved, and paints a great picture of what the town was like in its heyday."

Westcraft Metal Arts of Tatum

Whether you approach Tatum, New Mexico from east, west, north or south you immediately notice the artistic metal signs on ranches, businesses and street signs. Each of them is a product of Westcraft Metal Arts, a three-generation family-owned business. The street signs were a gift to the City of Tatum. O. J. Welch, known as Tiny, began the business as a hobby twenty-seven years ago when he retired from being a school teacher and minister. His son Jerrell joined him in 1982. “Tex” is his nickname and his motto is “When God gives you talent, use it, don’t lose it.” And he has been using his artistic talent in designing metal art since joining his father. Then in 1994 his son Ron became a part of the team. Ron’s wife Sherry operates the front, the customer service area
The country's largest public display of thundereggs - a dazzling array of color - lies hidden in a small dirt building with a cave-like entrance and a sign that has the appeal of a high school science book. But, for the curious, to crack open the rough-hewn wooden door to the Basin Range Volcanics Geolapidary Museum and Rock Shop 10 miles southeast of Deming and two miles below Rockhound State Park is to find the pearl in the oyster, the pea in the shell game or, in this case, the rainbow hidden in the plain rock.
The often rocky path that leads from yesterday to today runs smooth and little changed at the Salome Store in Magdalena, New Mexico. Located on Route 60, 25 miles west of Socorro, the family-run General Merchandise store opened its doors in 1910 and hasn't closed them since.

The Palace Hotel

For attractive, comfortable, and convenient lodgings in Silver City, no place surpasses the Palace Hotel. The hotel's charm combines old world elegance with down home Western comfort. Situated on the corner of Broadway and Bullard Streets, the heart of downtown Silver City's historic district, the Palace Hotel is within walking distance to shops, galleries, and restaurants.

Pondering the Gold Bar Bandits

"How heavy were the gold bars Curly Bill's gang stole anyway?" Uncle Wayne asked. "Well," I said, "from what I've read the bricks were probably three-hundred pounds each. Made it impossible for pack mules to carry them off in case of a stage robbery." "Yeh," Mike said, "it would take two bricks to make a pack balance, way too heavy for any pack animal besides a camel or elephant!" Uncle Wayne chuckled and said, "Besides that, a camel or elephant would be easy trackin' . . . each dung pile'd fill an ore car."

Gettin' Gritty at Granite Gap

Down in southwestern New Mexico, just above the bootheel and a hair away from the Arizona border, lies a rockhounder's paradise, an adventurer's enticement, a child's fun fix. Granite Gap - words synonymous with "home" for 2,000 miners and their families a hundred years ago - has since October 1996 been resurrected as an area attraction dubbed Granite Gap Ghost Mining Camp.

Exploring Granite Gap - the reverie

Uncle Wayne was arguing with Mike near a newly acquired stack of old lumber, the soon to be rock shop, and trading post. Uncle Wayne said, "We don't need no fancy dry goods, just maybe tobacco, flour, axle grease, salt, and beans. A respectable line of frontier groceries."

Double-E Guest Ranch is a 30,000 acre working Cattle/Guest Ranch which adjoins the legendary 3 million acre Gila Wilderness in southwestern New Mexico, in the small community of Gila. This area is considered by many to be one of the most spectacular in the world - generally untouched and pristine. Rising from an elevation of 4,700 feet at Ranch headquarters on Bear Creek to over 7,000 feet in the Pinos Altos Mountains, the setting at the Ranch offers guests a variety of astonishing landscapes - from wind swept mountaintop vistas, to deep incised vertical rock canyons; from open upland plateaus to peaceful cottonwood and sycamore-lined creek bottoms.

El Paisano - little extras mean a lot

Little extras can really enhance the dining experience. After 28 years of being in business, El Paisano's owner, Natalia Palacios, has learned that giving more than is expected can pay dividends in repeat business. The combination of great value and consistently good food is why El Paisano is one of Silver City's most popular Mexican restaurants.
